Surfer injured in second Sydney shark attack

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Australia’s most famous beach reopened Friday, hours after a surfer’s arm was shredded by a shark — the second shark attack in Sydney in as many days.

The 33-year-old man, whose name was not released, was bitten Thursday around dusk at Sydney’s popular Bondi Beach and suffered severe arm injuries, police said. Other surfers helped him to shore, where volunteers helped to stop his bleeding.

The man underwent a 10-hour surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and was in serious but stable condition Friday, hospital spokesman David Faktor said.

“We could see all of his bones cut like with a big knife. It was very clear,” French tourist Mikael Thomas, 21, told Australia’s Fairfax Media.

Lifeguards sounded the beach’s shark alarm and cleared the water. Surfer James McIntosh, 29, said he tied a leg rope around the victim’s arm as a tourniquet.

“I just kept pulling that leg rope as hard as I could. As soon as we put the tourniquet on there wasn’t any bleeding,” he told Fairfax.

On Wednesday, a Navy diver lost his hand after fighting off a shark in Sydney Harbour, not far from the Opera House. His leg was also badly mauled.

A recent string of shark attacks across Australia has left some swimmers jittery. In December, 51-year-old Brian Guest vanished while snorkeling with his son off a beach in Western Australia. A piece of his wet suit was later found, and officials said he was almost certainly eaten by a shark.

Last month, a 13-year-old surfer in the island state of Tasmania was dragged under water by a 16-foot (5-meter) great white shark, and a 31-year-old surfer was bitten while surfing at a remote beach in New South Wales state the same day. Both survived.

The following day, a shark latched onto the leg of a snorkeler in southern New South Wales. The man survived after pummeling the creature with his fists until the shark let go.

Most experts agree the cluster of attacks is a freak coincidence and say there is no evidence of an increase in the country’s shark population. Nevertheless, some have argued that cleaner, nutrient-rich waters have boosted the animals’ reproduction and drawn them into shallow waters.

Although sharks are often spotted off Australia’s beaches, fatal attacks are rare. On average, just one person is killed by a shark in Australia each year, according to the Australian Shark Attack File database.

Does anybody know any good websites I could put my puppy up for adoption on?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I’m selling my puppy so I need a good website to put him on. I live in Canada so I need a site that’s for Canada.

People who don’t want you to sell the dog need to get their mind strait, sure he’s supposed to be like a child to you, but if you can’t give him the quality time he needs then have someone else do it, this really shows you care for the dog and love it, someone who really loved a dog would do what your doing, people who just care about if they’re happy would keep the dog for themselves.
Puppyfind.com is a very good site.

I don’t know you’re situation, so I can’t really say you’re a bad person for letting a pup go. Lots of people must do it sometimes. Instead of finding a website (I don’t think anyone in the US can help with that anyway. Ther internet is the internet.) why not go and search for no-kill shelters that will take the pup? You can also put up posters about the puppy, so that people in your area are aware of it and may be interested in taking the pup from you.

We have recently taken in a cat that had nowhere else to go, question about her living arrangement….?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Her name is Bad Cat, and as her previous owners explained, she has that name for a reason. We knew her while she was with them and she was a “bad cat.” Since we have had her though she has been generally really docile. The only difference is that with us she is in our bedroom, which is NOT very large with NO OTHER cats (previous owners had 4 other cats), or humans but my husband and I. She has a litter box in there, food, water and a cat bed set aside in a closet so she can be alone when we are in there if she chooses. She woke me up this morning by rubbing her face all over mine and swishing her tail under my nose, which I guess is unheard of for her.

Is it wrong to let her stay in our room where she seems so happy, we have other cats that are not allowed in our room, so it really is like her domain. She never tries to get out, she just seems perfectly content. Would it be better to find her a different home or would it be ok to keep her with this arrangement?

first, she really likes you. i guess the last owners made her bad.

face rubbing means she is marking you as hers, they all so do that with other cats to socialize. they have a scent gland on the face.
she never marked the last owners because she did not want them.

a cat really can not live in one room. after a few weeks of the other cats smelling her under your door, let the other cats meet her, supervised. they might get along after awhile.

if not, you should find her a new home, but since she is so happy with you, she knows you rescued her, i think i would keep her. maybe take her outside on a harness for exercise.

getting all catts fixed will help to.

and change her name, she has proven she deserves a better name.

You’ve got to be kidding!Find her a better home? lol This cat is happy as a clam and loves you to pieces. She may eventually come out and meet the other cats but right now she is in hog heaven. Believe me, once she meets and greets with the other cats, she will be sleeping all over the house, or your bed could be covered with cats. Have fun, and thank you for taking Bad Cat in.

Am I ready to canter?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I can walk and post the trot and sit to a trot. I have been working on diagonals. I have cantered a little on a lunge line before.
P.S I ride english

Ya sure your ready to canter.
But dont get frustrated with it, if you dont get it right away. Cantering requires a lot of balance and leg muscles, so I would work on getting your legs stronger, not just for cantering, but for your overall riding. and its like I said before, if you dont get it right away, dont get frustrated. It took me a couple of months before I was able to actually able to go around the arena a couple of times before breaking. Just be patient, and go with the rhythm of the horse. Its hard to get at first, but have no fear, you will get it! :)

……….

Whether you are ready to canter doesn’t really have much to do with what you can do now (rising trot, sitting trot, etc.), but your strength and balance as a rider. Do you have strong legs and good balance? You should talk to you trainer or whoever you ride with and ask their opinion because it’s hard to judge your ability without actually being able to see you ride.

………….

if you have to ask on the internet if you’re ready, then chances are you’re not ready. . . go ask your trainer, i’m sure they are more knowledgeable about your skills and if your ready or not

ps you already know the answer to this question.

My horse has a permant greenie/poop stain. It has stained him and won’t come out! HOW DO I GET IT OUT?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

My horse has a huge “poop”/greenie on his white side. It WILL NOT come out. I groom and groom it. I use greenie blocks on it. I’ve bathed it AND quick silvered it millions of times. The spot is starting to turn almost greyish because all the quick silver… well I think.
So my question is::
Is there any product or method that can take the stain out and make it nice and bright white again??

2 words.. COWBOY MAGIC!!!
It works wonders and I always make sure I have it with me at shows because I have a light golden palomino and she always has “poop” stains on her legs. Just spray it on the stain, take a clean cloth and rub it it.. Let it dry and wa-la! Your poop stains gone..

You can also use any of the many whitening shampoos. I use one on her white socks and those work good too!

White ‘N Brite Horse Shampoo works wonders on gray coats.

Check your local feed store for a specific coat stain remover, not merely a white shampoo. Most likely, they’ll be able to suggest you something.
Thats bizarre that its not coming out. D:

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol

Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

how are is appetite and water intake?

How often is there a general election in Britain?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

General elections are held at least every five years. However not all Parliaments run for the whole five years, and a general election may be held before this period is up. In the event of a government having a small majority the election may well take place much earlier. For example, the general election of February 1974 resulted in a minority Labour government. The then Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, therefore called another election in October 1974, which resulted in Labour increasing its representation to just above 50% of the number of seats. Despite its small overall majority, the Labour government then remained in power for four-and-a-half years, finally calling an election in May 1979.

The last General Election was held on 5 May 2005.

In between general elections, by-elections are held as necessary to elect a new Member of Parliament to an individual constituency.
