Report: McCartney says he’s the political Beatle

Monday, December 15th, 2008

LONDON (AP) Paul McCartney claims that he was the real politicized figure in The Beatles, not John Lennon, according to an interview published Sunday. McCartney was quoted as saying it was he who first raised concerns over the Vietnam war within the group and advocated their anti-war stance.

Fans have long regarded Lennon, who wrote songs such as “Revolution” and in later years “Give Peace a Chance,” as the group’s authentic political voice. But McCartney claimed that his meeting with philosopher Bertrand Russell in the mid-1960s sparked his own and eventually Lennon’s curiosity about world affairs.

Following his talk with Russell, McCartney said he told “the guys, particularly John (Lennon), about this meeting and saying what a bad war this was,” The Sunday Times quoted McCartney as saying in the interview. The newspaper said McCartney was interviewed in Britain’s Prospect magazine, which is published on Wednesday.

McCartney’s publicist Stuart Bell was not immediately available to confirm the comments. According to the newspaper, McCartney said he believes his stance has inspired the work against African poverty carried out in recent years by Bob Geldof and U2’s Bono.

Unrealistic married life’s hopes driving brides to post-nuptial depression

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Due to unrealistic expectations of married life, a growing number of British brides are turning to counselling in order to deal with “post-nuptial depression”, medical experts have warned.

According to psychologists, about 10 percent of newly-married women are seeking counselling to cope with their “secret sadness”.

Dr Michelle Gannon, a San Francisco psychologist, said that a rising number of couples were finding it difficult to deal with the inevitable rows, having expected a life of marital bliss, reports the Telegraph.

“I tell them: ‘Where did you get the idea that you weren’t supposed to fight’ You are. It’s normal,” he told Time magazine.

“It’s also normal to remain independent and to be responsible for you own happiness. It’s unrealistic to presume your partner is going to do everything for you,” the expert added.

The researcher said that a decline in the release of hormones that stimulate affection could help explain why new brides feel low after marriage, and why sex lives can decline.

“Couples end up having less sex precisely when they think they should be having more. That is understandably stressful,” Dr Gannon said.

According to experts, the problems are exacerbated by men who bottle up their feelings and women who are too embarrassed to talk about their marital problems.

The research is based on studies of married couples in California.

Phone company: Heavy Internet users to pay more

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Phone company Frontier Communications Co. will probably charge its subscribers a dollar or two per gigabyte of Internet traffic if they go over the monthly allotments the company plans to introduce next year, Frontier’s chief executive said Friday.

The company is at the forefront of what CEO Maggie Wilderotter believes is a trend among Internet service providers toward billing for the amount of data subscribers use, rather than all-you-can-eat monthly plans.

Frontier provides service mainly in rural areas of 25 states. Rochester, N.Y. is its largest market.

The company caused confusion and some dismay among customers earlier this year, when it said it would charge for Internet use above 5 gigabytes per month, starting next year.

U.S. Internet users have no experience with tracking their usage. There have been few caps in place on downloads, and the existing caps have been so high that they affected only a tiny fraction of users.

Frontier’s planned cap would apply to the total amount of data that users download and upload in a given month. A traffic allowance of 5 gigabytes is enough for thousands of Web pages, or tens of thousands of e-mails, but could be exceeded by the download of three DVD-quality movies.

Wilderotter said Frontier was looking at providing higher monthly limits, perhaps 20 gigabytes per month, in more urban markets like Rochester and Elk Grove, Calif., where usage is higher than rural areas.

The company will also sell plans with higher download caps for higher prices, Wilderotter told The Associated Press, at increments like 10, 20 and 50 gigabytes.

That sort of tiered pricing for Internet usage is being tested in Texas by Time Warner Cable Inc., which is also Frontier’s competitor in Rochester.

“All networks are going to have to move to that paradigm in order to stay profitable,” Wilderotter said at a conference in New York.

“The business model that we’re using today really has our light users subsidizing our heavy users,” she said.

Internet usage can vary enormously from household to household. As an example, Wilderotter said 23 of its customers take up 28 percent of the network capacity in a town in West Virginia.

Charging the heavy users more is fairer and makes sure that the company gets a return on investments in capacity upgrades, she said.

The change to usage-based pricing, if it gains momentum, could have implications for companies like Netflix Inc. and Apple Inc. that are selling movie downloads, since those take up a lot of capacity.

Comcast Corp., the country’s largest cable company, on Oct. 1 made official a 250 gigabyte monthly limit, far higher than Frontier is contemplating. Previously, Comcast had a secret limit of similar size.

Wilderotter said Comcast’s move to set a high limit was likely a result of regulators coming down on the company for interfering with certain types of traffic from its subscribers.

“I think it was more their way to appease being in the doghouse with the Federal Communications Commission,” the CEO said.

A Comcast spokeswoman said the company had no comment on Wilderotter’s assertion

AB’s bill: Rs 100 crore

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Amitabh Bachchan is a mega star and his illness comes with a bill fitting his stature: Rs 100 crore. That’s the amount locked up in his films and plans of the Unforgettable tour in India, all of which will be on hold now that Bachchan has been advised one-and-a-half months’ rest.

“It is suggested that he take complete bed rest and stay away from starch and spicy food. Since Mr Bachchan is disciplined anyway, he should recover quite quickly,” says one of the doctors on Bachchan’s consultancy panel at Leelavati Hospital, Mumbai.

At present, the actor is working on Leena Yadav’s Teen Patti, a Rs 25-crore film, Sujoy Ghosh’s Aladdin, a Rs 45-crore film, and Shoojit Sircar’s Shoebite, a Rs 25-crore film. Other films he has signed include Time Machine, Pocket Maar, Aankhen 2, Bhairavi, Struggler, Talisman and his home production, The Legend of Kunal.

The budgets for the films on the floor will rise, unless they have an insurance against the leading artist, says a Bollywood trade analyst not wishing to be named. Manish Porwal, CEO, Percept Talent Management, says, “Insuring the artist is usual in Hollywood, but not in Bollywood, as the premium is quite high.

” Also, Bachchan has made movie commitments to directors Ravi Chopra, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi. Before he was hospitalised, he had committed to do a film with Pritish Nandy’s son Kushan.

Titled The Actor, the film incorporates many elements of Bachchan’s life. Sabbas Joseph of Wizcraft, event managers for the Unforgettable tour, admits that the November-December schedule for the India leg is now disrupted.

“Mr Bachchan’s health comes first,” he adds. About losses, he says, “The plans were concrete but not yet implemented, so it’s almost negligible.

T.I. has dual No. 1s but claims underdog status

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Although T.I. owns both the No. 1 album and single in the country, the platinum-selling rapper says he still feels like the underdog.

“Nobody has ever given me a win and nobody has ever said, ‘T.I., you know he’s going to do this thing.’ They always (say), ‘He’s not going to do this much, he’s not going to do that good, I don’t believe he’ll do that well.’ So its always been an uphill battle for me no matter how big I get I’m always the underdog,” he said in an interview.

But the 28-year-old may not be able to claim that underdog title for long. His latest CD, “Paper Trail,” sold more than 560,000 copies in its first week to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts, and his newest single, “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna, supplanted the album’s first single, “Whatever You Like,” at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

The 28-year-old rapper made the comments before taking the stage at Diesel’s 30th birthday celebration in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday night. The circus-themed event for the apparel company featured mash-up performances; other artists performing included N.E.R.D., Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, Joel and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, Chaka Khan and M.I.A., who performed her breakthrough Top 10 hit, “Paper Planes.”

Other celebrities in attendance included Lindsay Lohan, “Gossip Girl” co-stars Chace Crawford and Taylor Momsen, actresses Emma Roberts and Zoe Kravitz, and former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams.

T.I. also performed a song with the pregnant M.I.A., and called the lyricist “the hottest rap chick in the game right now, period.” T.I. recently sampled “Paper Planes” for a collaboration with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. The song, “Swagga Like Us,” appears on “Paper Trail.”

T.I. said the collaboration between the top rappers is a reflection of the respect they have for one another.

“It wasn’t like I said let me get Jay, Wayne and Kanye on the same song,” he said. “The song started off with me and Kanye and it was just me and Kanye, and mutual associates of all four of us suggested, ‘Hey man, if Jay and Wayne were on here too, it’ll be one of the biggest songs in hip-hop history.’ So I said, ‘You know what, that’s a great idea. It’s ambitious, but it’s a great idea.’ So we reached out and they agreed and it’s a pleasure to have them involved.”

The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, was sentenced to one year in prison on federal weapons charges after he was arrested last October before the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta for allegedly trying to buy automatic weapons. He is scheduled to start his prison sentence in March 2009 after completing 1,000 hours of community service.

“It’s a blessing to come from where I was at the beginning of the year all the way to right here,” he said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to assume such levels of achievement.”
