Taiyo Yuden DVD

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I am trying to think of a really fantastic gift for someone. I bought them a Taiyo Yuden DVD fr their last birthday and they were thrilled with it and I am wondering how to top that gift. They have not hinted about anything they want, like they did with that, so it makes it far harder to choose something that I know they will really like. I know that they like clothes but I never too good at guessing peoples sizes and so that can be very offensive if you buy them something too big and annoying for them if it is too small. I think I will steer clear of that idea.

I could go for something technical again but I do not want to make a mistake and get the wrong thing. I think perhaps I am just going to have to phone him up and ask him directly if there is something tat he wants. Better I think to have a present that is not a surprise than to get something that is disappointing because it is not what you want. I know that by not being a surprise it will not be able to top the DVD Yuden but at least it will not be a complete disappointment.

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Garmin 396 is a global position system designed for the aircrafts. This multi feature device is an ideal match for aircraft’s cockpit and also serves as a good navigator for the pilot. Ranked under the category of most reliable GPS systems, it is packed with XM Weather mapping technology, besides, METARs, TFRs, TAFs, satellite imagery and much more. The GPS comes in sunlight-viewable, 256 color TFT screen and incorporated with ultra modern TAWS-style audio terrain alerts. Garmin 396 is full of potential capabilities that give the pilots a wonderful adventure in air through its full Jeppesen aviation database and more than 150 XM Radio stations.

Another GPS model from Garmin is slightly less advanced than the 396 GPS model. The garmin 296 GPS model is featured with “Terrain” mode that gives the pilots with almost TAWS-like warnings, just like advanced 396 GPS model, but truly lacks whopping 150 XM radio stations. Garmin 296 is packed with automotive facility mode that allows the pilot to give accurate directions after landing. The automatic-routing feature similar to the one as seen in the car navigation system also allows the pilot to make the inspection of the land for any crevices or holes. What’s more, the GPS has high-speed 200-Mhz processor that helps in making fast map redraws.

Trail cameras – Becoming popular

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Trail cameras are now very popular among hunters and wild life photographers. Most of them have understood the importance of using trail cameras and the quality of pictures that they get in these cameras. Trail cameras were once only 35mm film cameras but they are available in 6 mega pixel cameras with digital infrared units. The clarity of the photos is really amazing and welcomed by the users. Reaching animals close enough and taking pictures may not be possible in all the cases or other options would be cameras with telescopic lens which can super-zoom the objects at very far distance, but this camera is going to be bulky and heavy to carry and walk around in a forest. Earlier, non coupled rangefinder cameras can display the distance of the object or the focus but requires the photographer to modify the value to the lens focus ring.

Some Cameras might have built in digital rangefinders and some may not. If the camera doesn’t have a range finder then it usually fitted t the accessory shoe of the camera. Predator calls is usually available on stores or you can just records some noises on the first visits and use them in the following visits.

Now, a battery-powered credit supercard that fights online fraud

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

An Australian technology firm has come up with a unique battery power super card, which they believe can fight online fraud.

The company reckons that it can stop up to 1 billion dollars a year in credit card fraud with its new revolutionary invention.

The card, which includes an alpha-numeric display, built-in microprocessor, a keypad and three years of battery power, will display a one-time number with which to authenticate each online credit card transaction, whenever the user will enter the pin number.

The technology was developed over two and a half years by a small Deloitte-backed technology firm based in Adelaide and Melbourne called EMUE Technologies.

EMUE’’s chief executive, Brendan McKeegan, said trials would begin with an Australian bank in the first quarter of next year.

Each card costs around five times more than a regular credit card to produce and will be sold to bank customers for between 18 dollars and 30 dollars each.

“The interest in this solution in the industry has been overwhelming and we look forward to working with the banks involved in the pilots to gain greater insights into how effective this solution can be in the longer term,” the age.com.au quoted Sandra Alzetta, head of innovation and new products at Visa Europe, as saying.

Mc Keegan revealed the technology could also be used for logging in to online banking and for verifying your bank’’s identity when it calls you over the phone.

With online banking, the password used is the code generated after typing your pin into the back of the card. He also explained that the pin was not stored on the physical card itself, so even if it was stolen it could not be hacked.

“When the card is created for the user it has a unique seed on it, and that unique seed is stored with the bank … along with the pin the user chooses,” he said.

“If I enter the wrong pin [into the credit card] it will still generate a number for me, but when I put that into the browser [to buy something] it will reject that as a transaction, he added.

DirecTV, TiVo to offer new HD DVR to customers

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

TiVo Inc. said Wednesday it will launch a new high-definition digital video recorder under an extended agreement with DirecTV Group Inc., reigniting a once-cooling relationship.

The new development deal extends the companies’ agreement by five years to Feb. 15, 2015, and calls for satellite television provider DirecTV to market TiVo’s DVR products to new customers for the first time since DirecTV began using a rival DVR.

The partnership helps TiVo, a pioneer in DVRs, gain access to DirecTV’s HD market. High definition is a key growth area for TiVo because it generally makes more per unit sold than with standard definition recorders.

TiVo shares gained 24 cents, or nearly 3 percent, to close at $8.75 in trading Wednesday, while shares in Dish held steady at $28.33.

DirecTV and TiVo began working together in 2000 when DirecTV first offered DVRs with TiVo service to its customers. But over time the relationship became muddled, with DirecTV using DVR technology from NDS Group PLC., a unit of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., which is a former DirecTV shareholder. Late last year DirecTV extended its contract with NDS to 2013.

DirecTV has continued to support TiVo service for existing customers, but the subscription base has shrunk as boxes break and as subscribers leave or upgrade to HD service.

With the new TiVo deal, TiVo gets a chance to serve DirecTV’s HD customers. El Segundo, Calif.-based DirecTV said it will still offer its own set-top boxes to customers, but the new TiVo box will be an additional option. This could boost Alviso, Calif.-based TiVo, whose subscriber base has been dropping steadily due to increased competition from generic recorders from cable and satellite operators.

TiVo, which also has distribution deals with cable operators Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications Inc., had 3.6 million subscribers at the end of the second quarter compared with 4.2 million a year earlier.

The new TiVo-DirecTV DVR is expected to be available mid- to late 2009 and will support both companies’ features and services. Pricing for the high-definition TiVo-DirecTV product has yet to be determined, according to the companies.

However, DirecTV will pay a “substantially higher” monthly fee for homes that use the new TiVo-DirecTV HD DVR than it pays for older TiVo-DirecTV DVRs, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The deal also gives DirecTV the option to extend the agreement for another three years to February 2018.

Further financial specifics were not disclosed.

Speaking at the Kaufman Brothers 11th Annual Investor Conference in New York, TiVo Chief Executive and President Tom Rogers said the two companies are looking forward to their renewed partnership.

“Both DirecTV and ourselves are excited that a marriage that once worked extremely well together now has a second shot,” he said.

Getting into the high-definition market should benefit TiVo, as DirecTV subscribers have been moving to HD but have not had a TiVo option available to them, Citi Investment Research analyst Tony Wible wrote in a client note.

“The new deal should help protect the roughly $22 million of high-margin revenue TiVo receives from DirecTV today,” he added.

BMO Capital Markets analyst Leland Westerfield said this agreement “sets the stage for TiVo to strike a spate of such marketing agreements with other pay-TV operators when (and if) the matter of TiVo vs. EchoStar Corp. is finally resolved.”

In January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed that DVRs distributed by Englewood, Colo.-based Dish Network Corp., which was spun off in January from EchoStar Communications Corp., violated the software elements of TiVo’s patent. The ruling set a legal precedent that gives TiVo leverage as it negotiates partnerships with other satellite and cable TV providers who want to use DVR technology.

Westerfield noted that the new DirecTV deal comes one day ahead of the contempt of court hearing in that case and adds pressure to Dish Networks. The DirecTV deal is non-exclusive for both parties — meaning that TiVo can sign with Dish Networks, too.

Simple Electrical Work?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

So, I want to put Christmas lights in my locker that turn on when you open it. We where thinking of battery operated lights, but the question is how do you get it to turn on and off with the opening and closing of it

Since you want to use batteries, use LED’s ( Light emitting diodes), low voltage, white or colors. To turn lights on when door opens, use a micro switch that has a lever attached. Door open, switch closes circuit.Door closed switch opens circuit. Mount switch on frame. When door closes,it must push lever on switch to open the circuit.A plunger type switch will work but when plunger in, switch contacts must be open. Good luck with your project. Exbelltel

You could just use a magnetic switch (like used for alarm systems). You put the magnet on the door, when the door closes the switch opens and turns out the lights! When you open the door the switch closes and turns on the lights.

Or use a push button switch that is normally on, when you close the door the switch is pushed in turning off the lights.

Either one would work but the little magnetic is easier to install.

How to Choose the Right GPS for you

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Marine GPS systems are a necessity to all sea voyagers. They make use of satellites that is located around the earth that sends the exact time and position of a sea vessel. There are several kinds of GPS devices that you may choose from depending on your purpose:

* Mapping- this is practical for businesses which need mapping system to gather information on the field. It can also be useful for travelers who need GPS to provide direction
* Surveying- this kind of GPS system is often used on the professional aspect of collecting land and terrain data. Operation can be a bit challenging. The maintenance of the device also entails technical expertise
* Tracking- this is designed to locate a ship or a vessel in real time which may carry cargo or passengers along commercial routes
* Navigating- this aids seafarers to go from one specific point to another point of destination. They may come with several features like voice prompting or personal data storage.

GPS systems are also vital as a military tactical gear. A combination of the variants above help the Marines locate ships or individuals during offensive, defensive, or rescue operations in the sea.

Before sailing off, it is a must for the crew to check their boating and marine electronics to guarantee the safety of everyone aboard and ensure the full functional capacity of the vessel in case of emergencies.
