AP source: Griffey agrees to trade with White Sox

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Ken Griffey Jr. agreed Thursday to accept a trade to the Chicago White Sox, leaving it up to the commissioner’s office to approve the deal because money is involved, a person with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press.

The 38-year-old Cincinnati outfielder has the right to block any deal, but agreed to move to the White Sox after getting more information about the proposed trade. The person familiar with the talks spoke on condition of anonymity because the teams are not commenting.

If the commissioner’s office approves the deal, the Reds would get right-handed reliever Nick Masset, who was 1-0 with a 4.63 ERA in 32 games for Chicago, and second baseman Danny Richar, who hit .262 with nine homers for Triple-A Charlotte.

Griffey joined his hometown Reds before the 2000 season, agreeing to a nine-year, $116.5 million deal. He makes $12.5 million this season, and there’s an option for 2009 at a $16.5 million salary. If a team doesn’t want to pick up next year’s option, Griffey will be owed a $4 million buyout under his contract.

Griffey became the sixth player to reach 600 career homers this season, but has struggled at the plate. He’s batting .245 with 15 homers and 53 RBIs despite playing in one of the most homer-friendly ballparks in Cincinnati.

Once one of baseball’s premier players, Griffey has never reached the World Series and has not even been in the playoffs since 1997 with Seattle.

The Reds were interested in dealing Griffey because of the size of his contract and their plummet after the All-Star break, which dropped them back to near the bottom of the NL Central, 13 1/2 games out of first place. The Reds haven’t had a winning season since 2000.

The White Sox lead the AL Central by 1 1/2 games over Minnesota, giving Griffey a rare chance to play in a pennant race. He could play center field for Chicago, with Nick Swisher to first base in place of slumping Paul Konerko. After Chicago lost to Minnesota 6-5 on Tuesday night, manager Ozzie Guillen indicated he was considering moving Swisher to first base, but he wasn’t confident anyone could take his place in center.

Swisher and Konerko could split the job at first, or Konerko and Jim Thome could platoon as the designated hitter. The White Sox are set in left and right field with Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye.

Griffey was an All-Century center fielder with Seattle, but his speed has diminished in the last few years because of age and injury. The Reds moved him to right field before the 2007 season, a switch that the outfielder initially disliked. Rookie Jay Bruce currently plays center for Cincinnati.

The trade that united Griffey with his hometown team in 2000 was hailed as a major breakthrough for the franchise, but turned out to be far less than expected. After the 2002 season, former general manager Jim Bowden tried to trade Griffey to San Diego for Phil Nevin, who used his no-trade clause to block the deal.

Bowden was trying to work out a deal with the Yankees in 2003 before Griffey got hurt. The White Sox also have shown an interest in Griffey, but Reds ownership was reluctant to trade its most prominent player as he closed in on 600 homers.

Economically speaking…..?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The task of economic policy is to create a prosperous America. The unfinished task of prosperous Americans is to build a Great Society. Our accomplishments have been many; these tasks remain unfinished > to achieve full employment without inflation; > to restore external equilibrium and defend the dollar; > to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of our private and public economies; > to widen the benefits of prosperity; > to improve the quality of American life -Lyndon B. Johnson.

Former president Lyndon felt that the most inportant first step in the war against poverty is:

A) A sound dollar

B) Efficiency in govenment

C) Full employment

D) Our natural defense

E) Private and public economics

C) Full employment

That’s the first thing he mentioned, so it would seem to be the first step.

Glazed Ribs Recipe?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I want to cook some ribs without the traditional BBQ sauce. I would love to try a honey glaze recipe or spicy rub… I dont know, just another delicious way of cooking ribs without tons of BBQ sauce.

I buy a rackof ribs, season them as you like with salt, pepper, garlic salt or whatever. Wrap the entire rack in heavy aluminum foil. Put on a grill between 350=400 degrees…for an hour, turning once. After the hour, remove the aluminum foil, ribs will be slightly browned. Brown as desired on gril and in 20-30 minutes add glaze such as honey-mustard pineapple juice with brown sugar. They need to cook about 20 minutes on each side after you put the glaze on.

Would anti depressants ever be prescribed to an addict?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Or any kind of drug used for chemical imbalances?

Very frequently antidepressants are given to addicts, quite simply the drugs can’t be abused. You can’t get high off them, they’re not pleasurable, they’ve got the abuse potential of tylenol. Also, depending on the substance abused, many addicts injure parts of their brain and require treatment for depression.

There are certain other drugs used in psychiatry, such as Valium(benzodiazepine tranquilizers), and Adderall(amphetamine like stimulants) which should absolutely -never- be given to addicts.

…………

yeah they would.

Pills are one solultion but talking about thigns is another option. You can ask for a referal by your GP and if you want there is a good chatroom at http://forums.talkcity.com/tc-depression… that allows you to chat with others who are going through depression.

…………..

yes - they can be prescribed. however, i you are an addict your doctor may only give you a few days supply at a time so you are not tempted by having a months worth of tablets with you.

………

Yes, non-addictive ones are prescribed quite often. Antidepressants are non-addictive, so you shouldn’t have a problem.

The dirrection storms travel?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

i thought that storms move from west to the northeast. why is it lately it looks like they move from the west to the southeast. or is it just me and i am really wrong. thanks for any answers

Storms can travel in any which direction. It all depends on the jet stream or trade winds for larger storms, and if they are scatted strorms, they either travel along a frontal boundry, or the direction of the wind in the upper atmosphere, which can point in any which direction.

What you are thinking of that usually has a west to east movement are weather fronts. But, like I said, storms can go in any which way. Today, I saw one storm that was moving from south to north, and another one that was moving from west to east.

—–

Just as these other fellas stated, in the northern hemisphere the general flow is from west to east, although the microscale movement is dependent more on the 700mb windflow, what is most often called the steering flow, and local topographical features such as bodies of water and mountains.

What is the difference between computer science and computer engineering?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I always though that computer science was the study of theory/maths which lies BEHIND how computers work. Does tend towards hardware, and the THEORETICAL study of how software languages/operating systems etc are put together.

And that computer engineering was more about APPLYING the findings (of computer science) to solving problems. So it does still study hardware/software, but more in terms of how it’s used to solve problems.

Computer science is probably where the greatest innovation/invention lies (Artificial intelligence, better data compression, encryption etc)

but as computer engineering is where those innovations actually make it to market,it tends to be the best paid.

(If you find a new way for computers do something, and others find they have to use your idea, you just might be able to generate huge amounts of money via royalties..)

I’m 12 years old and I’m trying to reduce my carbon footprint. Any ideas?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I am 12 years old and trying to “go green,” but my family doesn’t listen to me (I’m the youngest) and takes showers that lasts an eternity. Any ways I can persuade them or make a big change by myself?

Start small by just trying to convince them to do a few things and maybe they will catch on and start doing more. Here are a few ideas of things you can do or try to convince your family to do:

~Of course, recycle everything you can! (cans, bottles, paper, ect.)
~Buy the new energy saving light bulbs
~Use reusable batteries or recycle dead batteries properly
~Use reusable shopping bags
~If you have plastic shopping bags, use them instead of just tossing them. They can be used to pick up dog poo, line small trash cans, ect.
~Try not to use paper napkins or paper towel as much as possible. Instead use cloth napkins that can be washed.
~Try to use fewer paper plates and more washable ones.
~Take shorter showers
~Use cold water to wash clothes (The cold water Tide works very well)
~Turn off lights whenever possible
~Unplug or turn off appliences, computers, tvs, ect that are not in use at the time
~Use regular silverware, not plastic
~On a nice day, turn off the air/heat and open some windows. You save of the cost, get a nice fresh breeze, and help the environment.
~Plant trees around your house to shade and save on using more air conditioning
~Buy one stainless steel, reusable, water bottle instead of using regular plastic ones and then getting rid of them. This one you can clean and use over and over again!
~Walk or ride your bike whenever possible
~Carpool whenever you can

——

if you can tell me how big your carbon footprint is.. i’d be amazed… the liberal media sure is taking over

don’t even worry about going green or your carbon footprint or global warming or any of that nonsense. A lot of that stuff can also save you money. The less water you use, the less money. It’s simple stuff, like turning on the water to wet your toothbrush and then turn it off until you have to spit. You can ask your mom and dad to buy the little more expensive compact fluorescent light bulbs (but.. they’re guaranteed 7 year life span).. ten more dollars for fewer bulbs.. but you get about 6 years extra on the bulb’s lifespan. Riding your bike to your friends house rather than have your parents take you there in the car. Walk to the grocery store to grab that one thing you forgot. All of it is simple enough to do, and will save you (your parents rather) a lot of money.

You don’t have to go out and get your parents to buy hybrids.. they actually cost you more in the long run unless you plan on keeping the car for more than 12 years. You don’t have to install rain water collectors to make a difference.

It’s the simple things that’ll help you reduce your carbon footprint.. but please.. think for yourself and don’t take in everything the media forces into your.. oh soo absorbent brain.

Flying!?!?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

I’m going on an airplane tomorrow. I’m pretty muched packed. Should I bring my own blanket and pillow? And Anti-bacterial products. (Hand santitizer and wipes)?

Hand sanitizer I would say yes as long as it is a small bottle. As far as the blanket and pillow, I see people in the airport all the time with them. It all depends on how much you have to carry!
